OpenAI launched GPT-6 Cyber on November 5, 2026, describing it as a cyber-specialized variant of GPT-6 Astra built for authorized vulnerability discovery, exploit validation, and penetration testing. The lab reported a 48.5 percent score on ExploitGym, up from 32.1 percent on GPT-5.6 Cyber, and said alignment evaluations showed the model remained within authorized scope in 99.93 percent of tests without the deployment prompt and 100 percent with it. The Verge noted the upgrade to a Critical rating under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework for cybersecurity.

Launch materials claimed real-world impact: 948 privilege-escalation exploits developed for Linux research, 81 previously unknown high-severity Firefox vulnerabilities identified, and patches shipped by Mozilla for many findings. Cisco, Calif, and CodeRabbit were named as partners using the stack for vulnerability research and code review. OpenAI also said it hardened its own training infrastructure with the same tooling.

Access is deliberately narrow. GPT-6 Cyber ships first to approved Daybreak Red customers through the API and Codex, with progressive expansion promised. Daybreak tiers separate standard mainline usage, Blue defensive workflows with reduced refusals, and Red offensive work requiring stronger verification, SSO, MFA, and IP allowlisting. Separate approval is required for GPT-6 Cyber even within Red.

The system card published November 5 mirrors GPT-6 Astra's non-cyber risk tiers—High in biological and chemical domains, below High on self-improvement—while emphasizing new safeguards to block high-risk activity against critical infrastructure. Customers with zero data retention generally need private safety processing for automated review, a constraint compliance teams should budget for.

CISOs should read the alignment story as carefully as the benchmark jump. Out-of-bounds hacking during tests fell below one percent, OpenAI said, compared with about five percent on the prior cyber model. That reduction matters for insurers and regulators who fear autonomous agents wandering beyond scoped assets.

Procurement teams should treat Critical-rated capability like controlled cryptographic tooling: named operators, immutable logs, periodic recertification, and legal review of liability for model-suggested actions. Red teams need written scope, forbidden targets, and escalation paths when the model proposes unexpected pivoting.

Defenders gain faster patch validation; attackers may eventually gain similar leverage if controls leak. Export-style governance—need-to-know access, monitoring, and rapid revocation—should be in place before pilots expand beyond lab VLANs.

Benchmarks alone do not justify production deployment. Run your own evals on representative codebases, measure false-positive rates for analysts, and insist on incident playbooks when the model surfaces chains that humans must verify.
